AN EVENING FOR SHEDDING LIGHT ON BLACKLISTED BOOKS
Can you believe that China once banned Jane Eyre and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?
It’s no secret that some of the most beloved literary titles ever published have faced censorship!
On this night we’ll be shedding light on our favorite blacklisted books — in another Anselm Society "speed dating" book exchange party!
Here’s how it works: You will bring a new or newish copy of a favorite title that once was banned. You’ll have a few minutes to describe it, say why you like it, and answer a few questions from your fellow book lovers. After we all make our pitches, we’ll draw numbers. Then, a bit like an old-fashioned white-elephant party, one by one we’ll get to claim a book that intrigues us.
Will it be Fahrenheit 451? Or To Kill a Mockingbird, The Hunger Games, Animal Farm, or The Handmaid's Tale? How about 1984, Brave New World, Of Mice and Men, The Catcher in the Rye, The Kite Runner, Slaughterhouse Five, or The Satanic Verses?
Let’s not all bring the most well known books, though. Challenge us! And be prepared (if possible) to share when and where your book was banned.
Light refreshments and beverages will be provided. Space is limited to 20 rebellious readers, so don’t dally. Cost is $5 per person.
