A film composer and an Oxford academic walk into a bar...And start playing music. Joel and Joy Clarkson know this story all too well. As the sibling duo that makes up Two Benedictions, both have traversed vocational lines and put their heads together to create a whimsical, invigorating, and touching musical landscape, in their debut EP, "Sun of Man." On one side of the stage, Joel brings his love for classical repertoire, and his experience in writing expansive soundtrack music for cinema, and graces each song with his creative touch, at one moment invoking lush, romantic strings, and at another arousing a collective of enthusiastic jazz brass instruments. On the other side of the stage, Joy brings her equally potent powers of communication and performance as a purveyor of academic imagination at the University of Oxford, infusing each song with a voice of rare power, in one instance potent and immediately present, and in another sensuous and mysterious. Together, they weave a narrative of love's labor, waxing eloquent on whether it be lost or found. Their lyricism is both profound and approachable, setting each of our very human hopes and fears in a delightful poetic tapestry. As we travel with them into a rollicking world of wonder, we too look toward the horizon to see if the Sun of Man will indeed rise and save us again. Come along, and find out for yourself, in this magnificent journey.
